Seeing The Difference: Is Your Local Contractor Qualified?
You’ve saved your hard earned money. You’ve waited a long time to invest in your home improvements. You’ve done all your homework and now it’s time to find a qualified local contractor to do the job.
But, where do you start? What kind of questions should you be asking?
Some contractors look good on paper, but digging deeper you may find their “office” is that big, dirty ‘ol truck they drive from site to site. If this happens to you, run away as fast as you can!
Any contractor can meet with you and tell you about all their accolades, reviews, licenses, and past work. The key here is to have that contractor show you that they’re a legitimate business with a proven track record.
But They Were So Nice On The Phone
This is an easy way to “fall” for a contractor. Everyone loves someone who treats them nice. However, kindness only goes so far, especially if they don’t produce quality work. Let’s talk about three key components to finding a QUALIFIED local contractor.
-
Stability - A well established contractor will have all their ducks in a row and will be able to furnish all supporting documents. These documents include: certificate from the Contractor’s Licensing Board, an actual business license, and proof of insurance. That last one is a big deal for obvious reasons. Another great mark for an established contractor is they have an actual businessbuilding where they, you know, conduct business. Supplier letters carry a lot of weight as well. They show that a (reputable) supplier has done business with them.
-
Reputation - Customers are more inclined to do business with anyone that they’ve heard does great work. It helps calm their fears when they can read and see good things about the contractor. A Better Business Bureau accreditation helps consumers trust the contractor. Make sure they have been a member of the BBB for at least a few years. It’s easy for contractors to shut down their name and re-register under a new name. Also, being a member of their local Chamber of Commerce shows a great reputation of the contractor. Awards & customer references are a no-brainer. Make sure your contractor shows you these documents.
-
Professionalism - The little things make the biggest difference between a reputable qualified local contractor and some guy in his dirty ‘ol truck. Customer service and treating your clients with the utmost respect shows the contractor truly cares about their customer.
