Gunky Gutters Go Away

Mother Nature has a sick sense of humor at times and loves to dirty our homes. Gutters are the primary spot where gunk, leaves, and excess water builds up if not properly cleaned.

Neglecting gutters is an easy way to produce an unwanted expense and could easily damage your home. From ruining the siding to damaging nearby landscaping, a clogged gutter can wreak havoc.

Let’s face it, cleaning out the gutters isn’t the prettiest job on your to-do list. However, it’s a small price to pay to avoid that big price you would have to pay if you neglected to clean them.

Tips and Best Practices for Cleaning Out Your Gutters

Remember, safety first! Be sure to wear strong work gloves and use a sturdy ladder, preferably a metal ladder. Werner has been making strong, safe ladders for years. After securing yourself on the ladder, these tips will help keep those gutters nice and clean.

  • Just Scoop it - using a little garden scoop, clean all the debris away from the drains. Bring a bucket for easier debris cleanup.

  • Flush it Out - grab that trusty hose and give your gutters a good squirt. This will clean out all the dirt and dry junk that can collect in tiny spaces.

  • Unclog the Downspouts - it’s easy for leaves and debris to get clogged in the drains extending down to the ground. Grab a plumbers auger (snake) and filter it up until the clog comes free.

Consistency is Key

It’s easy to neglect your gutters because, well, they’re gutters. Not usually on the top of your priority list. They should be.

Being consistent in your cleaning is key to the success of properly working gutters. If your home is heavily surrounded by trees, especially pine trees, you’ll want to keep a close eye on your gutters. Pine needles easily find their way into gutters. And one last nugget of information, the best time to clean your gutters is in the spring and fall. Put it on your calendar and protect your roof and home!
